Car accidents can be scary. Knowing what to do if you’re in an accident can greatly help the situation be slightly less stressful.
First of all, remain calm and think safety first! Make sure everyone is safe before exiting the vehicle. Be sure to turn on your hazard lights or to set out warning cones or triangles, if you have them.
Pull out your phone and begin taking some photos. Get their license plate and photos of the individuals involved.
Call the police. You don’t have to have them cited, but get the report. Have them call their insurance. If you feel like the car is unsafe call us and we’ll help you organize a tow.
According to State Farm, call the police to report the accident, even if it is minor. And, let your insurance agent know about the accident as soon as possible.
Be sure to obtain info from all parties involved. Geico recommends that you get all of the following documentation:
“Names, phone numbers, addresses and email addresses of all occupants and witnesses; location; photos of the accident scene and all vehicles involved; company name, police number and phone number for other insurance companies; if emergency services respond: police report number, phone number, office name and badge number, etc.”
Getting into a car accident is the last thing anyone wants to do. It is important to take some precautions by simply knowing beforehand how you should react in case you find yourself in this situation.
